Discoveries and Life-hacks
Website: FutureME.org This great resource is from former student Esmeralda T. Future me allows you to write letters to the future you! Esmeralda notes: "...you can write letters to yourself or someone else for the future and it's free. I wrote one 3 years ago, and I opened last week. I didn't even remember [writing it], but it was super cool... I realized that I changed a lot ... since that time." I have done this type of exercise at conferences where participants wrote letters to their future selves and conference organizers then mailed the letter at some time in the future. Future me allows you to do this without extra help. And who knows? Future you might write back!
App: Zero. iPhone version only :( . Intermittent fasting (or time-restricted eating) has lots of benefits for the human body and is probably more close to the way the human body evolved its digestive tract (with periods of rest and repair). This app helps you track your IF goals and lets you know when you have completed your fast, which is great if your schedule is as irregular as mine. Plus, it has charts!! I have been using this for the past several months and liked it. If you want to know more about why you should consider intermittent fasting I'd suggest some of Rhonda Patrick's videos on the subject (or for motivation check out this testimony from NFL player turned actor Terry Crews.
Reading
Book: Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs. This is a memoir authored by the daughter of Steve Jobs. While a lot of attention has been paid to the poor way that Mr. Jobs treated his daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs also had a mother with profound mental and emotional problems. I usually don't read this type of book (books centered on emotions and relationships), but once I started, I found the book poignant and interesting. And sad. Growing up with a foundation of unconditional love from my parents, I didn't have the deep problems that she had to face. If you are interested in the personal life and personality of Steve Jobs, then this is a good book for you. If you are mainly interested in how he worked to develop great products, I'd recommend Creative Selection instead.
Scientific Paper: Coffee induces autophagy in vivo by Federico Pietrocola et al. This comes from John H. He and I have both been experimenting with intermittent fasting (IF) for the reasons mentioned above but we love our coffee so much that it is hard not to have it during the fasting period. While purists like Rhonda Patrick might disagree, it appears that there is growing evidence that drinking coffee during a fast doesn't break the fast and in fact might increase autophagy (the cleaning out of dead cells and proteins). Drink up!
